BOM RAIN MEASUREMENTS FOR YEA NO LONGER BEING RECORDED – CAN ANYONE HELP?

Jul 2, 2026

I have noticed that since the 21st June recordings of daily rainfall have ceased to be be recorded by the BOM site.

I believe that the person who was monitoring the rainfall has apparently left the district. To add to the problems, the number of private online weather stations has also decreased. At one point there were three of four online sites, now there is only one, this is located near the high school.

In the past  I was able to get an average of the rainfall recorded around Yea, this is no longer possible.

Should the site near the high school close down, there will be no rainfall information for the entire town. If someone is interested in taking on the BOM readings they should contact the bureau.

Hi Michael, I just want to say thank you for raising this issue and keeping and reporting monthly rainfall and averages I find it most helpful

        Hi Michael
This is a disappointment. Do you know whether there is official equipment supplied by the bureau? Is it automated or physically read each day? etc etc
Difficult to find someone to physically read at 9am daily
As an aside I think this is happening widely. Makes you wonder about data and records in general. How can the bureau claim the “wettest or driest” when stations move places etc?
A group such as the Golf Club may be able to host but arrangements would need some flexibility
        Cheers
        Gary

Hi Gary, You can buy an online automated system for a few hundred dollars, but the BOM seems to want to stay in the dark ages. Manual readings around nine, if it has rained in the past 24 hours. I’m sure 10am or later wouldn’t really matter. From what I understand the BOM provides the equipment. I presume it is still at Ron Litgens. Apparently he tried to find someone to do it, but no joy.

          Hope you are both fine.

          Kind Regards
          Michael
