On Friday 19 th September at the Yea Butter Factory, Murrindindi Film Society will close its season with the 2002 American romantic drama “The Shipping News”. Door open at 6.45 p.m. with the screening to begin at 7.00 p.m.
Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, this adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by E.Annie Proulx tells the story of Quoyle, a newspaper worker who through personal tragedies finds himself and his daughter living in the family’s ancestral home in Newfoundland. He is employed by the
local paper and eventually starts to write his own column which becomes popular with locals.
During this time he meets a number of quirky residents and befriends a widow with a young son. He also learns some unsavoury facts about his ancestors. The slow transformation of Quoyle is a bittersweet experience, but eventually he finds himself capable of a loving relationship once more.
Kevin Spacey plays Quoyle and Julianne Moore is the widow, Wavey. An impressive supporting cast includes Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett, Scott Glen, Rhys Ifans and Pete Postlethwaite.
