On Friday 16 th May at the Yea Butter Factory, Murrindindi Film Society will present the 1971 environmentally themed science fiction drama
“Silent Running”. Doors will open at 6.45 p.m. with the screening to commence at 7.00 p.m.
Set in the not too distant future, the film foresees a sterile world with no growing plants. Out around the rings of Saturn are a few lonely
spaceships, interplanetary greenhouses, pointed always toward the sun. Inside are forests, protected by geodesic domes, which are home for
the surviving plants and small animals of Earth. When an order to destroy these space “arks” is sent, one crewman refuses to comply with
the order, takes over the running of the ship and directs it out into deep space.
The director, Douglas Trumbull, gives a simple and quiet ecological message about the hazards of climate change. Bruce Dern plays the
crewman, a basically uncomplicated man who chooses his plants and animals over mankind, only to find he misses human company.
It is hoped that as many members as possible can attend to see this visionary film, still so relevant today. Prospective members and first
time guests will be made welcome free of charge. All enquiries to Jill Dwyer on 5797 2480 or [email protected].
